Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are a removable oral appliance used to replace some or all of your teeth and the surrounding tissues. Dentures are more advanced than they used to be, and today’s appliances look and feel better than ever.

Why should I get dentures?

Replacing your missing or damaged teeth with dentures has several benefits, including:

  • Restoring and enhancing your smile’s appearance
  • Improving your ability to speak, eat, and digest
  • Maintaining the shape of your face
  • Boosting your confidence and self-esteem

Your smile is more than just a functional tool –– it’s also a central component of your appearance and a reflection of your personality, making dentures a simple and effective way to improve your overall quality of life.

What are the different types of dentures?

Dr. Hernandez offers a few types of dentures:

Complete versus partial

Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in one or both of your arches. They’re made up of artificial teeth bonded to a gum-colored base that attaches to your mouth by suction or adhesive.

Partial dentures replace some teeth when you still have some natural teeth left. They attach to your mouth either with metal clasps or with a gum-colored base with openings where you still have natural teeth. Your partial dentures work in conjunction with your natural teeth, and they prevent your natural teeth from shifting out of place.

Conventional versus immediate

If you’re getting teeth extracted to make room for your dentures, you’ll have a choice between conventional and immediate dentures. With conventional dentures, Dr. Hernandez waits until your gums have fully healed from your extractions before taking an impression to make your dentures. Healing typically takes four to six weeks, during which time you have to be without teeth.

With immediate dentures, Dr. Hernandez takes the impression before you get your extractions so that your dentures are ready immediately after your teeth are removed. This saves you from having to temporarily go without teeth, but you’ll need to have more adjustments and relinings, since your gums shrink and change shape as they heal.
