How Often Do I Need Dental X-rays?
Many patients wonder if they really need dental imaging at every check-up. In Los Angeles, California, we believe in personalized care. Led by James Hernandez, DDS, we serve patients throughout Beverly Hills, the Miracle Mile, Culver City, and Fairfax. We focus on what your mouth actually needs.
If you have healthy teeth, you might not need dental X-rays as often as you think. Our team uses advanced, low-radiation digital technology to protect your smile. We tailor our imaging schedules to your unique oral health.
Do healthy adults need X-rays every year?
For a long time, getting dental X-rays once a year was the standard routine. However, modern guidelines from the American Dental Association state that low-risk adults without active decay only need routine bitewing X-rays every 24 to 36 months. This means you can safely space out your imaging if your teeth are healthy.
We determine your schedule during your routine dental exam. Dr. Hernandez looks at your history, diet, and hygiene habits. If you have no active cavities and great home care, we can safely extend your X-ray interval.
Why are we asking for your past dental records?
When you join our Los Angeles practice, we want to see your dental history. A 2026 guideline update from the American Dental Association instructs dentists to review prior imaging before ordering new radiographs. This simple step helps limit your cumulative lifetime exposure to radiation.
We recommend requesting your records from your previous clinic before your first visit with us. If those images are recent and clear, we can use them as a baseline. This saves you money and prevents unnecessary, duplicate scans.
Why don't we use heavy lead aprons anymore?
You might notice that we do not place a heavy lead apron over your chest. According to a 2024 expert panel report endorsed by the ADA, thyroid collars and lead shields are no longer recommended for dental imaging.
Modern digital X-rays are highly targeted. We use precise beams that limit scatter radiation. A heavy apron can actually block the narrow beam, which forces us to retake the image and doubles your exposure.
We use advanced digital technology to keep you safe. Our low-radiation digital X-rays provide clear images with minimal exposure. We always prioritize your comfort and safety during your visit.
Your oral health is our top priority. If you are due for a check-up or have questions about your imaging schedule, we are here to help. Please contact our team today to schedule your next appointment at our Los Angeles office.
